Ariel Gordon is a Winnipeg writer. Her first book of poetry, Hump (Palimpsest Press), was published in 2010, and her second is slated for publication in 2014. Most recently, she won Kalamalka Press' inaugural John Lent Poetry-Prose Award, which resulted into the letterpress chapbook, How to Make a Collage. When not being bookish, Ariel likes tromping through the woods and taking macro photographs of mushrooms. She blogs at http://janedayreader.blogspot.ca/.

"Heart Attack" is from the chapbook How to Make a Collage, published by Kalamalka Press in spring 2013.

Heart attack
  for MVR, 1968–2011

Wormy apple.

Balled fist. Fingers going white,
bloody marks on your palm –
suckerpunch.

Filet mignon on a plate,
spoiling.

Obstinate dud.
To be disposed of.
Red/blue wires crossed.

Bloody handful.

The house you grew up in,
on fire.

Rotten egg & the hand cupping it
& the arm pitching it.

Jerky knee
to the nuts.

Jack in the box
with a bent lid. Its jaunty tune.
