The Calling

There are no rules.

There is only an abundant world
that calls us to ourselves:

Like the earth, hungry
for the first of the rains—

Like the drop that clings to a leaf,
quivering until its round fullness

compels surrender, to fall free
and break upon the expectant earth.

 

Nausheen Eusuf lives in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She holds an MA from the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins, and her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Acumen, Orbis, Envoi, Mezzo Cammin, and other journals. After teaching for five years, she is heading back to graduate school at the University of Georgia in the fall. "The Calling" was previously published in Envoi 148.
