Empty Nest
The cup-shaped nest
has been empty for some time now
the fledglings having been edged out
and found their wings
But still the barn swallows
defend it dive-bombing me
as I sit on the porch with my tea
chattering angrily for my invasion
of their territory
I should not complain
if this lively pair claims the space
between lightshade and soffit
such a small corner to share
so short a time
before winter silences their song
