The Octopus Hunter

by Janna Wilson

an astonishing collection from Haida Gwaii—Janna Wilson's poems reflect the surroundings of ocean and creatures and a coming to grips with life, love, death and a new culture.

an excerpt from "as you lay dying"

all those tired afternoons on grey lit days
when the sun dipped before four,
the babies wanted to watch you on TV
with such obsession.
again! they’d shriek when the documentary ended,
pressed fingers to the screen to reach you
even though you were right here.

Janna Wilson’s work has been published in Canadian Living, Northword and in the now defunct Big World Magazine. Writing her first book, British Columbia, A Walking Guide (Cicerone Press, UK, 2002) led her across continents to Haida Gwaii where she now lives with her husband and three children in the Haida village of Skidegate. This is her first book of poetry.
